Physician Spotlight on Dr. Gerard F. Marciano

What inspired you to become a foot and ankle surgeon?

I’ve always enjoyed solving complex orthopedic problems while helping patients return to the activities they enjoy most. The foot and ankle are incredibly intricate, and I was drawn to the variety of conditions I can treat—from sports injuries and fractures to arthritis and deformity. It’s rewarding to help patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life.

What types of conditions do you most commonly treat?

I treat a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including sports injuries, fractures, tendon and ligament injuries, ankle instability, arthritis, bunions, hammertoes, Achilles tendon disorders, and deformities of the foot and ankle. My goal is to provide personalized treatment that helps patients get back to their daily activities as safely and quickly as possible.

What is your practice philosophy?

My practice philosophy is that diagnosis and treatment come from opening up a line of dialogue. No two people are truly alike, and I try my best to understand your goals of treatment. Curating a plan takes several things into consideration and hearing from you is the first step.

What does a first appointment with you look like?

The first visit starts with listening. I want to understand your symptoms, how they’re affecting your daily life, and what your goals are. After a thorough examination and review of any imaging, we’ll discuss the diagnosis and all available treatment options. Together, we’ll develop a plan that’s tailored to your needs and lifestyle.

Do all foot and ankle problems require surgery?

Not at all. Many foot and ankle conditions can be treated successfully without surgery through physical therapy, bracing, orthotics, activity modification, medications, or injections. Surgery is only recommended when conservative treatments are no longer providing relief or when it’s the best option to restore function and relieve pain.

What advice would you give someone dealing with persistent foot or ankle pain?

Don’t ignore it. Foot and ankle pain can affect every aspect of your daily life, and many conditions are easier to treat when they’re addressed early. If pain is limiting your ability to walk, exercise, or do the things you enjoy, it’s worth having it evaluated before it becomes a more significant problem

What do you enjoy most about your work and outside of it?

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, spending time outdoors, and being with family and friends. Whether it’s exercising, exploring new places, or simply relaxing with the people closest to me, I value maintaining a healthy balance outside of medicine.
