ONS hip and knee replacement surgeon Dr. Kevin Choo, co-director of ONS Outpatient Joint Replacement Center and Director of Joint Replacement at Greenwich Hospital, recently performed the first robotic total knee replacement using Rosa-OptimiZe technology in the state of Connecticut. The procedure was completed at the Stamford Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC), a specialized surgery center exclusively for ONS patients.
Robotic-assisted technology helps surgeons create a customized plan for knee replacement prior to surgery. Based on each patient’s unique anatomy and their pre-operative range of motion, surgeons can predict what specific steps and adjustments will need to be made. During surgery, robotic technology incorporates infrared cameras and trackers placed into bones around the knee, to capture 3D points to make a model of a patient’s knee anatomy. This allows for sub-millimeter precision during surgery, and guides bone cuts and implant placement.
Benefits of Robotic-Assisted Technology such as Rosa-OptimiZe
- Pre-Operative CT Scans No Longer Needed: Decreases ionizing radiation exposure for patients.
- Accuracy: Improves accuracy and precision to the pre-operative plan for optimal implant placement and reproducibility.
- Safety: Significantly lowers the risk of an “outlier” surgery, which occurs when there is significant deviation from the optimal size and/or position of the implant.
- Peace of Mind: Patients can feel comfortable that their surgeon has an advanced robotic assistant to ensure a consistent outcome.
- 3-D Modeling: The live 3D model during surgery is used to plan the bony resections based on each patient’s unique profile and allows for highly accurate component positioning.
“In joint replacement surgery, increasing precision is important to achieve consistent and excellent results,” said Dr. Choo, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee replacement. “This technology allows us to pre-operatively plan and execute in an accurate fashion, and consistently size and implant the knee replacement correctly.”
