What is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation?
According to the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, it “is the branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders –particularly those of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary systems – that may produce temporary or permanent impairment.” All physiatrists practice Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
What is Physical Medicine?
Physical medicine is the use of modalities such as ice, heat, electrical stimulation and ultrasound to decrease pain and inflammation. Physitrists also use exercise programs and lifestyle change to aid the patient in recovery and prevention of recurrence of their problem.
Are physiatrists medical doctors?
All physiatrists are medical doctors. They go to medical school with other doctors and then do a residency to complete their training.
What types of conditions does a physiatrist treat?
While physiatrists treat a wide variety of conditions including stroke, amputations, burns and cardiac, here at ONS our physiatrists specialize in musculoskeletal problems.
How do physiatrists diagnose?
Physiatrists use many different tools to diagnose a patient’s condition, but the most important ones are listening to a patient describe their problem and performing a physical exam. When needed, physiatrists utilize conventional radiological tools such as x-ray, CT scan and MRI. They also may perform diagnostic nerve study tests called EMG/ Nerve conductions which can help to localize nerve damage.
Are the x-ray guided injections painful?
While all injections may be uncomfortable, the x-ray allows the physician to direct the needle quickly and precisely to the location it needs to be. This decreases the pain involved in the procedure.
