Kyphoplasty

Spinal fractures that collapse a vertebra can be caused by osteoporosis or cancer.

A Kyphoplasty is performed to restore alignment and to stabilize the fracture, thereby reducing pain. Through tiny incisions, the surgeon guides an instrument that delivers a small orthopaedic balloon into the vertebra. The balloon is carefully inflated, raising the collapsed vertebra. After the balloon is removed, bone cement is injected into the vertebra to prevent it from collapsing again.
